Helen Healy graduated MBBS from the University of Adelaide in 1978. Following the internship year, she entered the Physician Training Program at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Dr Healy studied Renal Medicine for a year at this hospital and for a further year at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Dr Healy completed her FRACP in 1984 whilst an Australian Kidney Foundation Scholar in the Department of Pathology, Sydney University under the supervision of Professors Susan Dorsch and Bruce Hall. Her Master of Medicine research program in the mechanisms of immunocompetent cell behaviour in a rat model of glomerulonephritis was converted to a PhD program that was completed in 1995. During the latter stages of these studies, Dr Healy practiced Renal Medicine in rooms at St Mary's and at the Mt Druitt and Westmead Hospitals in Sydney. She moved to Queensland in 1991 and has worked at the Royal Brisbane Hospital since. She was appointed as a Staff Specialist in 1995 and Senior Lecturer, University of Queensland in 2000. She established the Kidney Research Laboratory in 2000.

Dr Healy's research interests are understanding the mechanisms of progressive kidney injury and health outcome biometrics.

Dr Justin Westhuyzen
Justin Westhuyzen was born and educated in Johannesburg, South Africa. He attended the University of the Witwatersrand where he obtained his BSc, BSc Honours and MSc degrees. He joined the South African Institute for Medical Research in 1975, working as an electron microscopist for two years before turning to research into nutritional biochemistry. In 1982 he obtained his PhD degree for his work on the neurobiochemistry of cobalamin deficiency in an animal model, the Egyptian fruit bat. He enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with the director of the Institute, Professor Jack Metz, and was appointed Head of the Nutrition Unit in 1985. Four years later, he emigrated to Australia, joining the Conjoint Renal Laboratory in 1989 as senior scientist. His research interests involve the nutritional and biochemical aspects of renal failure, in particular, oxidative stress and dialysis, renal anaemia, and tubular proteinuria. He has over 80 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Pat Metharom
Pat Metharom was born in Bangkok, Thailand. With her family, she moved to Australia in 1989 and attended Darwin State High School before migrating south to the Sunshine State to finish her secondary education at Wavell High School. She obtained her Bachelor of Applied Science in the field of biotechnology with honours from the University of Queensland. In 1998 she started her PhD degree on "the transfer of a melanoma associated antigen gene to dendritic cells by lentiviral vector for immunotherapy of murine B16 melanoma". She started as a part-time researcher with the KRL in the year 2000 to gain more experience in other scientific fields (and to supplement her meagre PhD scholarship money) and is currently working for the KRL full-time while having the unenviable task of writing up her thesis.
